Computer Gaming Or Console Gaming?

There is a lot of crossover in games; but there are, currently, two main platforms for video gaming and they are computer gaming and console gaming. A console is, basically, a small computer designed specifically for enhanced graphics and performance for the playing of video games. Consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft’s Xbox and the Sony Playstation 3 are all examples of this; other names such as Gameboy, and Gamecube, too. Many have predicted the ‘death of computer gaming’ because of the high sophistication and popularity of consoles but the evidence of an actual decline in computer gaming is yet to be apparent; it’s eulogy a little premature.

Playing games on a desktop computer or laptop is an entirely different experience to that of playing a game on a console. Just like each console has its cheerleaders and fans, the personal computer has its die hard gamers. Many draw the lines of distinction along age ranges and suggest that the majority of console game players are teens and those in their twenties, while much of the dyed in the wool pc gamers are older generation players who grew up with computers as their first stop shop for all things digital. That may have been true a few years ago but consoles such as the Microsoft Xbox were marketed specifically at older players and the markets are far more dispersed now. Originally, specific games were designed and released for specific platforms, too, so another way of distinguishing one type of player from another was due to their games preferences. One of the games genres that was always popular on consoles was the ‘Fighting Game’ such as the famous ‘Streetfighter’ and those who wanted to play it needed to have a specific console since that was the only way it could be played.

These days, games producers see the benefit of designing their games to be used on a variety of platforms so the release of a particular title might cause excitement for a particular gaming community but it is just as likely it will be released to a variety of platforms at once, or else with its popularity further versions would soon be released. So what it often comes down to now is the player’s personal preferences. Some prefer the features of an Xbox, others stand by the Playstation, and more still prefer to play their games on a desktop computer. Whatever the platform, there is ever more choice in computer gaming.
